The island of Sint Maarten-Saint Martin is the smallest land mass in the world to be shared by two different nations. The 37 square miles are owned by both France and the Netherlands Antilles. Each side retains its own distinctive national culture and you can easily have two vacations in one.
There is no real border, just modest monuments and signs. The island is known as a delightful holiday environment. Beaches and nightlife are spectacular; duty free shopping and dining some of the best in the Caribbean.
St. Martin, the FRENCH territory, covers about two thirds of the island and is technically a part of Europe and the European Community. St. Martin is defined by European elegance - a slice of France in the Caribbean. Visitors can enjoy great shopping complemented by charming cafes and pastry shops. A steep climb to Fort St. Louis, the imposing monument above Marigot Bay, rewards visitors with a stunning panoramic view of the island and sea.
The DUTCH side, St. Maarten, is a member island of the Netherlands Antilles and part of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, but not considered European territory. Water sports, golf, and tennis abound. The capital of Philipsburg bustles with shopping, quality dining, elegant casinos, and vibrant nightlife.
